More about us

Situated in the heart of one of England`s most beautiful medieval towns, The George in Rye is regarded as one of the best hideaways on the South Coast. The hotel occupies a warren of interconnecting rooms dating from the 16th to the 18th centuries and recently underwent a complete renovation from new owners Alex and Katie Clarke. A home away from home, The George offers comfort, relaxation, stunning interiors and wonderful food and drink - the perfect base from which to explore East Sussex and the South Coast.

Rye is a medieval townscape locked in time and with a fascinating history. Four miles from the white beach of Camber Sands, the sea air is wonderful any time of year. With plenty to occupy you for a few nights, we look forward to welcoming you to our hotel.

Rooms

The George in Rye's twenty-four rooms underwent a complete renovation in 2006. Each has been individually designed in keeping with the hotel's historic fabric, with their own colour schemes, fabrics and bespoke furniture. Our Deluxe Double rooms all offer contemporary comforts and gadgets, which include:
  • Vi-Spring beds
  • Frette Italian Linen
  • Flat screen LCD-TVs
  • Wireless Internet Access
  • Tivoli clock radios
  • Marble-topped baths
  • Lefroy Brooks bathrooms
  • Power showers
  • Aveda products
We can offer in-room Aveda massages or alternatively treatments at our spa partner - The Rye Retreat.

Our Deluxe Double Rooms are generally larger than standard double rooms. Some rooms have roll-top baths, walk-in showers adjacent to the bath, antique furniture and feature or four poster beds.

Food and Drink - From Sussex to the Mediterranean

Rye is at the heart of one of England's most celebrated foodie areas, with a wealth of local produce and wines. In The George's Dining Room, Head Chef Rod Grossmann pays slavish respect for seasonal ingredients, sourced from the local farms and fishermen, and offers a modern Mediterranean menu that changes monthly. For lighter meals, The George has its own historic pub, The George Tap, which serves plenty of Sussex Ales and wines from local vineyards.

For private dining, The George has a 16th century gallery room, while our original Regency Ballroom hosts parties for around 100 guests.

Discover Rye

Rye
Rye is steeped in history and character and in the 18th Century, its prosperity relied on smuggling as much as any other trade. You can wander around Rye's cobbled streets and narrow lanes, visiting the local landmarks and variety of specialist shops, from art galleries, clothes, antiques and books.

Camber Sands
Camber Sands is the only sand dune system in East Sussex. It is a valuable habitat for many different plants and animals and is also a popular destination for thousands of holidaymakers every year. A short drive from Rye or follow the cycle route to Camber, passing Rye Windsurfing school, ask at reception for directions.

Rye Harbour
Rye Harbour is a flat, open and historic landscape, with a Nature Reserve that can be visited from Rye, Winchelsea Beach and Rye Harbour. There are four bird watching hides to help the visitor to see some of the wealth of wildlife here. The area also contains considerable historic interest with military fortifications from the 16th, 19th and 20th centuries.

Other local attractions include:
  • the cathedral city of Canterbury
  • numerous National Trust Houses and gardens including Bodiam Castle
  • family attractions such as the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch steam railway and Smugglers’ Adventure (Hastings Old Town)
  • great shopping of Brighton
